Construct Validity

The six factors extracted from the SRS were computed for factor analysis by Principal Component Analysis with oblique (Oblimin) rotation (Table 5.5). These factors accounted for 43 per cent of total variance. Items loading higher than .30 on a particular factor were considered as being indicative of that factor. Almost all items load highly on just one individual factor (except for item 45 and 52). The pattern of factor loadings clearly demonstrated that items were clustered in six sets, which measure six different factors.

Sub-scale intercorrelations were satisfactory among the six factors (Table 5.4). They ranged from .27 (between interpersonal difficulties and academic stress) to .61 (between family problems and suicide ideation). All correlations were in the hypothesised directions, supporting the construct validity of the SRS.

Overall, hypotheses that correlations between the six factors and SBQ, CES-D, semantic differential, and SE are high were supported (Table 5.6). The most obvious set of correlations was that between suicide ideation and the above four constructs, yielding r= .73, .70, .58, -.56, respectively.
